Bumble vs Hinge in the UK: Messaging, Profiles and Paid Features

A practical comparison for UK readers choosing between the two apps, with the current messaging rules and upgrade boundaries.

Our view: choose the format you will actually use

We would start with Hinge if you prefer to respond to a particular photo or prompt rather than begin with a bare match. Bumble deserves a look if you like a more time-bound opening exchange and want an in-app video call before sharing contact details. Both allow conversations without a subscription.

Neither app is a universal winner for UK dating. Your location, preferences and the people who use the app nearby matter more than a brand’s positioning.

Bumble’s first-message rules have changed

The old shorthand that women must always message first is no longer an accurate explanation of Bumble’s current system. Its help centre says Opening Moves have been removed. Each person can send one opening message before the full conversation opens.

Both initially have 72 hours from the match to send a message. When one person sends theirs, the other has 72 hours from that point to send their opening message. If neither sends within the initial window, the match expires. A Note sent with a like counts as an opening message.

Our assessment is that the deadline suits someone who checks the app regularly. If you tend to leave matches unattended for days, it is a practical limitation to consider before paying for more discovery. Read the timer shown on your own match rather than relying on an older description of Bumble.

Hinge gives you something specific to reply to

Hinge’s photo and prompt format gives an opening comment a clear subject: a shared interest, an answer you disagree with or a question about something in the profile. That is a useful design difference if you find “Hi, how are you?” exchanges hard to sustain.

The free account limits outgoing likes and shows incoming likes one at a time. You can still match and message. Hinge+ removes the likes limit and lets you review incoming likes together; HingeX includes those benefits and adds discovery and priority features. More access can save time, but we would not infer better compatibility from the upgrade alone.

A thoughtful prompt is only useful if the answer tells you something. We would favour specific descriptions of everyday life and intentions over a profile filled with jokes that give the other person nothing to ask about.

Calls and privacy may decide it for you

Bumble supports video calls inside the app, so a match can have a conversation without first exchanging telephone numbers. Hinge has removed its voice and video calling feature, although voice notes are still available in messages. If an in-app video call is a firm requirement, Bumble has the clearer fit on this point.

Bumble’s optional Incognito Mode, included with Premium and Premium+, limits your profile’s visibility to people you have liked. That can be a meaningful reason to pay if controlling discovery matters to you. It is not an identity check or a guarantee that another user will behave well.

On either service, avoid putting your workplace address, regular routine or private contact details in a public profile. Use our dating safety guide when deciding how to move from app chat to meeting.

Compare the offer, not an old price list

Bumble’s prices depend on the tier, term and package, with current offers shown in the app. Compare both apps’ checkout prices for the same subscription length before deciding which costs less.

Compare the total due today, the renewal charge and the feature you need. A longer plan with a lower monthly equivalent can still be the bigger purchase. Neither app requires a subscription for ordinary matched conversations, so try the free route before treating payment as a necessary starting point. Our UK dating costs guide explains how to compare subscriptions and separate extras.

Profiles and filters: what can you decide before matching?

Hinge makes individual answers part of discovery

Hinge asks for three prompt answers and a set of photos; its help centre says the photo requirement varies locally between four and six. Profile fields include dating intentions, religious beliefs, family plans and lifestyle details. This gives you several ways to assess whether somebody’s everyday life fits yours, although members can hide some fields.

Use that detail to ask a specific question rather than treat a completed profile as proof of compatibility. “What’s your favourite walk near Bristol?” tells someone more about your interest than an opening comment about how attractive they are.

Check the free preferences before buying more filters

Hinge’s published basic preferences include age, distance, religion and relationship type. A Dealbreaker makes a selected preference strict; without it, you may see people outside that preference. Additional criteria such as children, family plans and smoking sit among its subscriber filters.

Bumble’s basic filters include age and distance, and its official country list includes the UK for distance filtering. Advanced Filters are part of Premium. Bumble also offers a setting to show other people once those within your filters run out. Check that setting if you keep seeing profiles outside your preferred range.

For UK readers, mileage alone can be misleading. Ten miles across a city and ten miles without a convenient train or bus route are different commitments. Set a distance you could manage for a weekday date, then separate essential preferences from ones you can discuss. Relaxing an optional filter is different from compromising on whether you want children.

Which app is better for a serious relationship?

Hinge’s relationship-focused branding and prompts may appeal if you want a considered profile. They do not establish that every member wants a long-term relationship. Bumble also gives people a route to dating and conversation; a timed opening exchange does not tell you what they want beyond the first message.

Our preference is to judge the individual profile and conversation. Does the person state what they are looking for? Do their answers fit your priorities? Can you discuss availability and expectations without evasion? Those questions are more useful than assigning all Hinge users one intention and all Bumble users another.

The same caution applies if you are dating after divorce, over 50 or as a single parent. Neither app automatically resolves incompatible family plans or schedules. If age-specific services are part of your search, compare our over-50 dating options alongside these apps rather than assume a mainstream platform is unsuitable.

A practical choice for different UK situations

Your situationWhat we would prioritise
You dislike blank opening messagesTry Hinge’s photo and prompt comments. Choose a profile detail you genuinely want to discuss.
You want a video conversation before a dateBumble has an in-app video option. Hinge’s removed calling feature makes this a concrete difference.
You cannot check messages most daysConsider how Bumble’s opening timer fits your routine before choosing it as your main app.
You live outside a large cityCompare the relevant profiles within a realistic travel range on both free accounts.
Family plans or lifestyle are essentialRead the visible profile information first. Compare the precise paid filter you need rather than upgrade for a vague promise of better matches.
You want control over who discovers youConsider Bumble’s paid Incognito option, while recognising that profile visibility and personal safety are separate issues.

How to compare them without buying two subscriptions

Start with accurate, recent photos and the same broad intentions on both apps. Use comparable age and travel preferences. A week can be a useful initial check of the interface and available profiles, but it is too short to prove which app will produce a relationship.

Keep a few simple notes: whether profiles seem relevant, whether the free restrictions interrupt something you need, and whether conversations have a natural next step. A quieter week is not evidence that you need paid visibility. Local availability and other people’s schedules can change.

If an upgrade solves a specific problem, choose the shortest commitment that makes sense for you and record the renewal date. If the problem is that there are few suitable profiles nearby, try changing an optional preference or testing another service first. You can compare alternatives in our free dating apps guide.

Which would we try first?

  • Hinge: if specific profile answers help you decide whom to contact, or you prefer to attach a comment to a like.
  • Bumble: if you check matches regularly and value a video call within the app.
  • Either, without paying: if you are still finding out whether there are suitable people within your preferred distance.

Try one app with a complete profile and consistent preferences. Judge it by whether you find relevant people and conversations you want to continue, rather than by the number of likes alone. If the local selection is poor, test the other app before buying an upgrade.
