Lex is a queer community app that combines dating with friendship, groups, events and local conversation. Its defining feature is a text-led social feed: members post what they are looking for, respond to other people’s words and join interest-based community spaces instead of making every interaction depend on a profile photo.

The app welcomes anyone who identifies as part of the LGBT+ community and does not exclude members based on gender. It gives particular priority to trans safety and applies a zero-tolerance rule to transphobia, transmisogyny, trans-exclusionary language and the fetishisation of trans people.

1. Registration and eligibility

Lex is limited to adults aged 18 or older. It is intended for people who identify as part of the LGBT+ community, without a rule excluding a particular gender. Accounts that lie about being over 18, impersonate another person or engage in catfishing can be banned immediately.

2. Profiles

Members can add a profile photo and answer profile prompts, but the profile is not the whole product. Words, interests and community activity carry more weight than on photo-led dating apps. Members can browse profiles alongside the social feed to understand who is behind a post or message.

3. Text-first social feed

The central feed contains personal posts from other queer users. A post can look for a date, a friend, activity partners, advice or community conversation. This format is especially effective for people whose interests, humour and identity are difficult to express through a short swipe profile.

4. Friends and dating

Lex does not separate every user into a dating-only funnel. Members can state whether they want romance, friendship, community or plans and respond to people with a matching purpose. The flexibility is useful, but intentions should be made explicit because not every conversation is romantic.

5. Groups

Groups organise members around shared interests, identities and local communities. They provide a persistent space for conversation instead of requiring every connection to begin through a one-to-one profile. This makes Lex stronger for community building than a conventional dating app.

6. Events and local plans

The Events and local discovery tools help members find queer activities nearby. Community members can discuss plans and arrange meet-ups, but the guidelines prohibit selling goods or services, paid-event promotion, ticket sales, crowdfunding and fundraising.

7. Direct messaging

Members can move from a post, group or profile into direct conversation without buying a messaging plan. Keeping early contact inside Lex preserves access to blocking and reporting if the exchange becomes uncomfortable.

8. Cost

Lex is free to download and use. There is no Lex Premium membership, paid visibility plan, message credit, Boost or paid filter package in the current service. This makes the cost comparison straightforward: the full core community experience costs £0.

9. Moderation

Members are encouraged to report guideline violations. Lex can delete posts at its discretion and ban accounts for hate speech, harassment, discriminatory language, impersonation, scams, illegal activity and other serious violations. Photo reports include an “Inappropriate photo” category for faster moderator review.

10. Main limitation

Lex is not designed for rapid matching based on distance, appearance and a long set of dating filters. Its value depends on local queer activity, the quality of posts and a willingness to participate in a social feed. People who want a dating-only app with structured compatibility matching will prefer another service.

Lex is one of the clearest alternatives to photo-first LGBTQ+ dating apps. It is strongest for adults who want community, friendship, events and dating in the same place and who prefer to connect through words and shared plans. The absence of a paywall is a major advantage: members do not need to subscribe to discover people or continue a conversation.

The trade-off is that Lex is not a conventional matchmaking product. It does not provide the deep filters, compatibility scoring or high-volume swipe queue found elsewhere, and activity can be much stronger in large UK cities than in smaller towns. Its community rules are unusually specific and provide a clear standard for respectful participation.

Lex has no automatic-renewing dating subscription and no paid feature bundle. App-store payment cancellation is therefore not part of normal Lex account management.

The service is fully usable without payment. Lex’s community value comes from local participation rather than an upgrade.

Lex applies zero tolerance to hate speech, racism, transphobia, biphobia, fatphobia, ageism, ableism, sexism, religious discrimination, harassment and bullying. Microaggressions and exclusionary language can also lead to removal or a permanent ban. Impersonation, fake or scam accounts, catfishing and false claims of being over 18 are prohibited.

Solicitation is not allowed. Members cannot sell goods or services, promote paid events, sell tickets, crowdfund, fundraise or publish posts asking other members for money. Photo rules prohibit nudity, pornography, sexually explicit content, images of minors, violence, weapons, illegal content and images that do not belong to the uploader.

These rules do not amount to identity verification for every user. Keep early conversations inside the app, report suspicious posts and never send money or financial credentials to another member.

• Report hate speech, harassment, catfishing and inappropriate photos through the app.
• Do not respond to fundraising, ticket sales or private requests for money.
• Use a Content Warning or Trigger Warning when discussing sensitive topics.
• Meet in a public place and tell a trusted person where you are going.
• Block an account that ignores boundaries or pressures you to move off-platform.

Lex opens more like a queer community feed than a dating catalogue. Members scroll posts, join conversations, discover groups and events and then visit profiles when someone’s words or plans are interesting. This reverses the normal dating-app order: personality and context appear before a decision based mainly on photographs.

The design works well for spontaneous social plans, interest-based friendship and low-pressure dating. It also gives newly arrived users a way to find local queer community without presenting every interaction as romantic. Direct messages are available without an upgrade, so an active conversation is never interrupted by a payment screen.

The experience is less effective where the local feed is quiet. Lex does not compensate for low activity with a national compatibility system or large manual search directory. It is best treated as an active community space: thoughtful posts and group participation produce better results than waiting passively for profile likes.

No automatic renewal

Lex does not sell a Premium dating subscription, so there is no recurring Lex membership charge, renewal date or paid plan to cancel.

Temporarily deactivate or permanently delete

Open the profile by tapping the smiley face in the bottom-right corner, tap the three lines in the top-right corner and choose the required action under Account. Temporary deactivation preserves the option to return. Permanent deletion requires identity verification and cannot be recovered.

Delete stored data

Our recommendation

Lex is best for LGBTQ+ users who prefer text-led local posts and community conversation to photograph-first swiping. Use the free app; paid support is optional and is not needed for ordinary posting, replies or messaging.
